The true story of an operation which was a revolution, not only for the world of medicine. Frankfurt 1967. A young doctor called Lisa Scheel is trying to get a foothold in the male-dominated world of transplant surgery. But after she is passed over by her main professor in favour of a male applicant, on the spur of the moment Lisa heads off to Cape Town. Here, she starts work for Dr. Barnaard, who, like his colleagues in Frankfurt, is planning a heart transplantation. Together with the surgeon Hamilton Naki, who due to apartheid can only join the team secretly, Lisa is a major contributor to the first heart transplant in history.

The film is based on the events surrounding the Lengede mining accident in 1963.

Elisabeth Romm wants to start all over again: the attractive and successful antiques dealer is determined to get married for the second time and start a new life with the love of her life, Bert. But then it happens: On the day of the planned wedding ceremony, Bert collapses with a heart attack in front of the registry office and dies! From one moment to the next, the stunned Elisabeth is left with nothing. She has not only lost her beloved partner, but also her livelihood. She had already given up her antique store and her apartment. At first, the grieving, distraught Elisabeth stays with her daughter Isabel. But she soon realizes that Isabel's selfish husband Adrian in particular wants his mother-in-law out of the house as quickly as possible.

The people of Merchingen used to live from tourism, which has been at a standstill for years. With the incorporation, the idyllic provincial village is now threatened with the loss of its independence. In its hour of greatest need, a rumor spreads that the statue of the Virgin Mary in the local field chapel is shedding tears. This prompted skeptics, but an ecclesiastical investigation confirmed the authenticity of the supernatural apparition. The people of Merchingen rejoice, but the hardworking farmer's wife Kathi feels increasingly uncomfortable in her own skin, as she knows better than anyone else about the earthly origin of the divine sign.
